Collier sets state record in the discus, Joyce takes home fourth
The Hennessey Eagles had two athletes travel to Catoosa High School last weekend to compete in the OSSAA State Track and Field Championship. Both sophomore Madison Collier and senior Dalton Joyce won medals last year at the State Meet, and were looking to capture some more hardware with some repeat performances.
Collier started off strong on Friday, as she broke the State Meet record in the discuss with her final toss of the day. Having already secured first-place in the event, Collier gave it her all in the final attempt and hurled the discus 148 feet and 11 inches.
That mark eclipsed the prior record by five inches, set by Sarah Tolson of Pawhuska in 2010. The throw was Collier’s top effort of the year, although her personal-best in a high school meet came as a freshman last spring at the Meet of Champions where she hit a distance of 150 feet, four inches.
The performance earned Collier her second gold medal in the discus, in her first two years competing in high school. It will also earn her a return trip to the Meet of Champions.
