Eagles tip off season in Jones, boys earn first victory
After having their season opener against Fairview cancelled, the Hennessey Eagles traveled to Jones last Friday to finally open up the basketball season. While the Lady Eagles dropped their opening game to Jones 79-26, the boys beat the Longhorns 65-53.
For the girls, Hennessey had a clear size disadvantage as the Lady Horns had four key players that were well over six-foot tall. That was amplified by the fact that Gracie Mills did not dress out, leaving the Lady Eagles without their tallest player.
Jones’ size not only showed up in the paint where Hennessey was outscored and outrebounded, but also in the Lady Horns’ trap defense where their size made it difficult for the Lady Eagles to pass around them.
“They are a really good team,” said Coach Haylie Simunek. “They have good size. They are well coached and disciplined. It was a tough matchup for us.”
