Hennessey PD explains protocol on handling domestic abuse
While it might seem that small towns handle such serious issues as domestic abuse differently than big cities, protocol for handling them is dictated by state mandates, or federal mandates for cases that meet certain criteria.
Handling domestic abuse cases requires that each individual situation meets certain criteria. In order for a case to be considered domestic abuse, a domestic relationship must be established between the victim and the offender.
For example, the victim and offender must be in a dating relationship, must have lived together or must be related by blood, just to name a few conditions. Once a domestic relationship has been established, police try to resolve the situation in a way that includes communication and the most amicable means possible.
